The name Tamrock has its roots in Tampella, a Finnish heavy industry manufacturer founded in Tampere in 1861. During the Second World War, when imports of drill spare parts were cut off, Finnish mining company Outokumpu approached Tampella to begin manufacturing them domestically, and by the late 1940s Tampella had moved into full drill production of its own. The Tamrock name itself was coined by mining engineer Matti Kilpinen after he joined Tampella's engineering works in 1965, and it grew into a business synonymous with rock drilling. In the late 1980s, Sandvik established a cooperative partnership with Tamrock, gradually increasing its stake until it acquired the company outright as Tampella ran into financial difficulties. Sandvik chose to retain Tamrock as a brand name for its rock-drilling equipment, with production continuing at its original home in Tampere, Finland, to this day. With roots stretching back to wartime necessity and decades of dedicated rock-drilling engineering, Tamrock remains a name trusted for precision underground drilling.
