The name Schmitz Cargobull goes back to 1892, when blacksmith Heinrich Schmitz founded the company that would go on to become Europe's leading manufacturer of semi-trailers, truck bodies and trailers for temperature-controlled freight, general cargo and bulk goods. His two eldest sons, Josef and August, took over in 1943, building the company's reputation throughout Germany in the following decades under the motto "Schmitz trailers pull off every move," while opening further plants in Berlin and Vreden. Under the third generation, Dr. Heinz Schmitz and Peter Schmitz, the company grew rapidly through the 1970s and 80s, and made a radical strategic shift in the 1990s to focus purely on trailers with platforms and tarpaulins, box bodies, tipper bodies and container chassis. That focus paid off, with production climbing from around 5,100 vehicles in 1992/93 to 17,000 a year by the end of the decade. With over 130 years of German engineering heritage across four generations of family leadership, Schmitz Cargobull remains one of the most trusted names in trailer manufacturing today.
