The name SCANIA traces back to 1891, when Vagnfabriks-Aktiebolaget i Södertälje, known as Vabis, was founded in Sweden to build wagons for the expanding rail network, alongside a separate company, Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Scania, established in Malmö in 1900. The two businesses merged in 1911 to form Scania-Vabis, focusing entirely on trucks, buses, and initially passenger cars, with chief engineer Gustaf Erikson developing the company's first V8 engine in 1916. Scania went on to build a modular component system that became the foundation of its manufacturing efficiency, and introduced its distinctive V8 turbo diesel engines in the late 1960s, still a hallmark of the brand today. Following decades under the Saab-Scania partnership, the company took its current name, Scania AB, in 1995, and is now part of the TRATON Group alongside MAN, Navistar, and Volkswagen Truck & Bus. With more than 130 years of engineering heritage, Scania is recognised as one of the world's leading manufacturers of heavy trucks and buses.
