The name Sandvik traces back to 1862, when Göran Fredrik Göransson founded Högbo Stål & Jernverks AB in Sandviken, Sweden, becoming one of the first in the world to apply the Bessemer process for steel production on an industrial scale. From these early roots in steel, Sandvik moved into rock-drilling equipment as early as the 1860s, and by 1901 had launched its first rock drill steel to meet growing demand from mining and infrastructure projects. The company's rock-drilling expertise expanded significantly in 1996 and 1997 with the acquisition of Finland-based Tamrock, a world-leading maker of drilling rigs, which was combined with Sandvik's own operations to form what is today the Sandvik Mining and Construction division.
