The name KONECRANES traces back to SMV Lifttrucks, founded in 1947 in Småland, southern Sweden, a region that grew into the world's centre for heavy-duty lift truck manufacturing thanks to its forestry and sawmill industries. SMV built its first lift truck in 1959 and went on to develop heavy reach stackers and forklifts with capacities from 10 to 60 tonnes, including, in 1998, what was then the world's largest reach stacker for container handling on river barges. Following a period of reconstruction in the 1990s, SMV was acquired in 2004 by the Finnish crane manufacturer Konecranes, itself tracing its own crane heritage back to 1933, forming what is known today as Konecranes Lift Trucks. The SMV name lives on in the model names of Konecranes' premium Blue Range. Today Konecranes Lift Trucks is a recognised global leader in heavy-duty forklifts, reach stackers, and container handling equipment, and has expanded its range into fully electric lift trucks.
