The name HYSTER goes back to 1929, when Charles Swigert founded the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon, to build winches and lifting machines for the Pacific Northwest logging industry. The name Hyster is said to derive from "hoist'er," a call loggers used when preparing to lift a load. The company introduced one of its first forklift trucks in 1934 and adopted the Hyster name outright soon after, going on to become one of the top lift truck manufacturers in North America by the 1950s. Hyster was acquired by NACCO Industries in 1989, and its materials handling business was later spun off in 2012 as the publicly traded Hyster-Yale Materials Handling. Today Hyster builds forklifts and container handlers at manufacturing sites across eleven countries, including the Netherlands, and continues investing in electric and hydrogen fuel cell technology.
