Best Tractor Company merged in California to form Caterpillar Tractor Co., building on Benjamin Holt's earlier invention of the first practical tracked chassis. Caterpillar entered the excavator market in 1972 with its first customer-ready hydraulic excavator, the model 225, after several years of prototype development at its Technical Research Center in Illinois. The company introduced its first mini excavator in 1981 and expanded into the compact segment with dedicated 1.7 and 1.8 tonne models in 1998, broadening its range for smaller job sites and confined spaces.
